Small Animal Services

Internship Program

Glenwood Veterinary Clinic offers a 1-year rotating internship position that starts and ends in July of each year. The internship is operated through the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Avenues program. Veterinary interns, similar to their counterparts in human medicine, are recent graduates from veterinary school who spend a year under the tutelage of the permanent staff at GVC. During this year, interns are gradually given increasing levels of responsibility with case management as their skills and clinical judgment improve. The focus of the internship is to teach new graduates more about the daily workings of equine medicine and surgery, but they also participate to a minor degree in the small animal and food animal side of our practice.

The initial 2 months of the internship is spent working closely with each equine veterinarian in the practice. This period allows interns to learn the geography of our practice, meet our clients and their horses, learn our practice philosophy, develop their technical and diagnostic skills, and gain confidence in their overall abilities as an equine veterinarian. Interns will also receive formal training in diagnostic imaging and anesthesia during this introductory period. The remainder of the year sees GVC interns receiving increasing levels of responsibility in case management and client communication, and appointments will be scheduled by the front office staff specifically for the intern. Interns will participate in all surgeries, and will be responsible for management of all hospitalized cases.

In addition to the traditional hospital setting, interns at GVC also are involved in primary ambulatory practice as well as primary emergency care. The mixed animal nature of the clinic offers unique learning opportunities in other species areas. We are proud that interns who have completed our program have been very successful with placing themselves in excellent professional positions following their year at GVC, ranging from associate positions in large equine practices to acceptance in highly competitive equine surgical residency training programs.

Dr. Tom Bohanon is the extern and intern coordinator and can be contacted for internship inquiries via e-mail at bohanondvm@glenwoodvet.com.

We encourage any interested candidates to visit our page under the AAEP Avenues database and visit our practice through an externship.
