GVC offers externships for veterinary students wishing to gain exposure to equine and mixed animal practice as an adjunct to their veterinary education. Externships are typically 1 to 4 weeks in duration, although other arrangements can be made. Our externship program operates through the AAEP Avenues program for veterinary students and is targeted towards prospective interns seeking further training in equine medicine and surgery. More information can be accessed at http://www.aaep.org/avenues_details.php?intern_extern_id=154.
GVC wants our externship experience to provide maximum exposure to a wide variety of equine cases. Externs participate fully in case discussion and management, and are encouraged to share ideas from their existing experience and training. This participation includes development of diagnostic and treatment skills, technical skills, client communication abilities and sensitivity and practice management. Externs are given varying levels of responsibility on an individual basis, dependent on their skill and training level. We expect externs to leave GVC with a good understanding of the day to day workings of our practice, and hope they will achieve significant improvements in their ability to diagnose and treat a broad variety of equine conditions. Students who complete externships at GVC are given the highest consideration for our internship position.
Housing
GVC has housing accommodations for visiting students. We provide sleeping and basic cooking facilities.
Glenwood Springs Area
The Roaring Fork Valley area offers many recreational opportunities for the outdoor enthusiasts. Time permitting, externs often take advantage of the mountain playground in the surrounding area, including hiking, biking, climbing, skiing, rafting, kayaking, fishing and soaking in the local hot springs pools, all within minutes of the clinic.
