Equine Services
Ambulatory services
We have 3 full-sized 4WD ambulatory units at GVC that allow Dr’s. Luedke, Bolger, and Martin to make farm calls throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, west to Rifle, and east to the Eagle/Edwards region. All trucks are fully equipped with refrigeration, hot and cold water, full dental equipment, most medications, and equipment that allows veterinarians to perform many field surgical procedures. Radiology and ultrasound can also be performed in the field as part of this service.
Shock Wave, IRAP, and Stem Cell Therapy
Glenwood Veterinary Clinic has used focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy to successfully treat a variety of musculoskeletal problems since 2004. This state of the art technology has greatly enhanced our ability to manage severe ligament and tendon injuries, and return equine athletes to competition much sooner than we were able to prior to this modality. In conjunction with shock wave treatment, we will sometimes also use stem cell therapy and IRAP (Interleukin Receptor Antagonist Protein) to enhance healing in soft tissues and joints. GVC was the first practice on the Western Slope to offer IRAP therapy, which harvests, concentrates, and purifies potent anti-inflammatory molecules from the patient’s own blood for injection into injured joints and tendon sheaths. Because of our long experience with IRAP, we are able to advise clients accurately regarding when IRAP might be helpful, and when it is not likely to be effective. We also have experience with all 3 methods of harvesting and concentrating stem cells, and have used this treatment with great success in severe tendon and ligament injuries, as well as arthritic joints.
Endoscopy
GVC offers video endoscopy for both foals and adults, which allows both our doctors and clients a full-size real time image of the area in question. Our system includes a 3 meter endoscope that allows complete visualization of the adult stomach, and in most horses, the upper part of the small intestine. The thin 8 mm pediatric endoscope can be used to image the upper airway of both foals and adults, and can also be used to explore other areas, including the urethra, bladder, and uterus.

Surgical Services
Since the opening of our equine surgical building in 2004, Glenwood Veterinary Clinic has offered a full range of equine surgical services, including colic surgery, long bone fracture repair, arthroscopy, upper respiratory surgery, cryptorchid castration, correction of angular limb deformities in foals, and complex wound repair. Three well-trained anesthetists use positive pressure ventilation, modern anesthetic gasses, and direct monitoring of blood pressure and cardiovascular function to assure a safe anesthetic experience for our equine patients. Induction to anesthesia and recovery take place in a well-padded room for maximum safety to the patient, and recovery is assisted by one or more staff as indicated. Glenwood Veterinary Clinic is proud to have the only board certified equine surgeon between the front range of Colorado and Idaho, and receives referrals from the Western Slope, Utah, and Wyoming. Laboratory services
Glenwood Veterinary Clinic is fortunate to have a sophisticated in-house lab facility. With this capability, we are able to quickly make diagnoses related to infections, electrolyte disorders, and chemical alterations in the function of most major organ systems. We are also the only practice in Western Colorado to offer in-house Coggins testing for equine infectious anemia, which allows us to perform this test on an emergency basis for clients in need of immediate Coggins papers.
Lameness Diagnosis
All of our equine veterinarians routinely perform both simple and complex lameness evaluations. These are performed in the clinic by Dr. Bohanon, who has a special interest in lameness as well as surgery, or may be performed in the field by Dr. Luedke or Dr. Bolger. Several trotting surfaces are available for evaluation, and the ability to take digital radiographs and perform ultrasound exams as needed enhances our diagnostic ability.
Ultrasound
We have 2 ultrasound machines at our practice which are complemented by a full range of probes, allowing diagnostic imaging of all body systems. Dr’s. Luedke and Bolger use this equipment extensively both in the field and at the clinic for reproductive work in the diagnosis of early pregnancy and to get mares pregnant, while Dr. Bohanon uses ultrasound primarily for the diagnosis of soft tissue injuries involving the musculoskeletal system. Ultrasound is also frequently used as a non-invasive technique in the diagnosis of colic and other disorders of both the abdominal and thoracic cavity.
Radiology
At GVC, we have 3 X-ray units that allow us to obtain simultaneous digital images both in the field and at the clinic. Our largest machine, a 60 MA high-frequency unit, gives high quality images of the stifle, and enables us to image the shoulder joint in most horses. X-rays can be burned to a CD or sent by email as part of our radiology service.
Intensive Care Facility
We have 2 ICU stalls at GVC that are located in the hub of activity in the new surgical building, allowing us to very closely monitor patients in need of this service. Stalls are equipped with overhead fluid administration, and patients can be monitored directly around the clock, thanks to our excellent support staff that is on call 24/7 to provide patient support for horses in ICU. We can also provide intensive care for many foals that require this service.
Isolation facility
Glenwood Veterinary Clinic has a unique isolation facility that provides excellent monitoring capability of often-times critical patients with infectious diseases. This allows us to effectively and aggressively treat animals with severe respiratory or gastrointestinal infections without risking the well-being of other hospitalized patients who are at the facility for elective reasons.
General Horse Care / Preventative Medicine & Wellness Programs
Much of our practice is centered around regular preventative medicine, including vaccinations, deworming and dentistry. This spring, we will be launching our first comprehensive Wellness Program. There will be two different levels of care within the program and are designed to prevent problems before they occur, at a very competitive price. More details will follow this winter.
Dentistry
We are equipped with state of the art Power Float dentistry equipment and are all equipped to perform dentistry in a field or hospital setting. Dr. Bolger has had extensive training with Dr. Dennis Rach, inventor of the Power Float machine and tools. We recommend dental exams on an annual basis.
Small Animal Services
Glenwood Veterinary Clinic offers many services for the small animal patient. Yearly wellness exams, (as well as) vaccinations and microchipping can all be preformed in a routine appointment. Diagnostic services offered include an in house laboratory, ultrasound, and our new state of the art digital radiography. Routine surgical services include spays and neuters as well as dentistry using an ultrasonic scaler and polisher. More extensive surgeries performed include fracture repair, cruciate ligament reconstruction, and exploratory abdominal surgery. We are pleased to introduce radiowave technology to our surgical armamentarium. We now have the ability to offer your pet shorter anesthesia and post-surgical healing times while decreasing pain, swelling, and blood loss. Radiowave surgery also has a reduced risk of infection. Please call to find out more about our small animal services and facilities.
GVC offers a variety of food animal services, primarily focused around beef cattle. Pregnancy diagnosis, fertility testing, regulatory testing and vaccination as well as individual cow medicine and surgery are routinely performed. We also offer individual animal services for a range of species including small ruminants and camelids.
Acupuncture
GVC is proud to offer acupuncture for all animals as part of an integrative approach to veterinary medicine. Dr. Angie Bolger completed an extensive course in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture at Colorado State University this past winter. Acupuncture can be of great value in managing musculoskeletal problems, lameness, arthritis, chronic pain, digestive, reproductive and urinary tract disorders. Acupuncture integrates itself very well into traditional veterinary practice.
